✨🍭 Mission: Don’t Eat the Marshmallow (Even If It Smells Like Victory) ✨🐰

Key Takeaways:

  • Standing firm during temptation brings deep joy and a “crown of life” promised by God.
  • Temptation grows from desires inside hearts, not from God’s character or plan.
  • Every good and perfect gift flows from a Father who never changes or tricks His children.
  • Families can treat temptation like a mission: pause, pray, and pick God’s way together.
  • Kids learn courage when small choices at home line up with God’s Word in everyday moments.

Okay, so here’s what happened.

We were having family Bible time, and Mommy read something about temptation. And I shouted, “OH! I love those!” Because I thought temptation was a type of cookie. Like the swirly ones with sparkles and just a teeny bit of frosting on top. You know, the kind that whisper to you from the snack shelf like, “Hey kid… come closer…”

But then Ariel, who’s all older-and-wiser and knows things like fractions and how to spell “discipline” without help, said that temptation is actually when something tries to make you do something wrong—even when you know what’s right.

Like when you really want to take the biggest cinnamon roll even though you already promised Fluffernutter the biggest one because he had a very heroic dream last night where he saved six jellybeans from a lava monster.

So now, we’re on Temptation Patrol. That’s what Fluffernutter calls it when we use our Bible brains and heart-shields to say, “No, thank you, sneaky bad idea!” Even if the sneaky bad idea is shaped like an extra cookie… or an upside-down crown made of gummy worms.

Wanna hear how we learned to stand strong, even when things got super tempting? Buckle your boots and fluff your bunny ears—we’ve got a story to hop into!

TL;DR

James 1:12–18 paints temptation like a trail that begins with desire and ends with hurt, while God offers better gifts and a “crown of life” to those who keep trusting Him.

Mission “Don’t Eat the Marshmallow” turns this passage into a family challenge: pause before grabbing quick rewards, remember God’s promises, and choose obedience together.

👑✨Why Saying “No” to Sneaky Things is Actually a YES to God’s Crown! ✨👑

So guess what? The Bible has a super sparkly promise, and it goes like this:

“Blessed is the one who endures temptation, for when they pass the test, they’ll receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” — James 1:12 (KJV)

I made Mr. Fluffernutter a paper crown when I heard that. It had glitter and jellybean jewels (but not real jellybeans because last time I ate the treasure… oops). I thought maybe the “crown of life” meant we all get to wear tiaras in heaven while riding sparkle-ponies. 🐴✨

But then Daddy Ryan explained that enduring temptation doesn’t just mean squashing bad ideas with a holy hammer. It means trusting God when it’s hard, like when you really want to peek at your sister’s secret drawing… but you don’t! Because love and respect are way cooler than sneakiness. He said the “crown” is actually eternal life with God—and also big joy right now when we choose to follow Jesus!

Then Ariel, my very brainy big sister, asked, “But what if the test is, like, super duper hard?” And Yaya said, “Then God gives us the strength to keep going.” (I think Yaya is secretly part superhero grandma.)

So now I think every time we say “nope!” to temptation, we’re actually saying YES to God’s amazing promise. Like collecting invisible treasure sparkles in our hearts that shine brighter every time we trust Him. 💖💎

🧠 Think-About-It Time!

How would you describe your “crown of life” if you could draw it?

Can you remember a time when you had to say “no” to something that felt really tempting?

What helped you trust God instead of giving in?

Fun Fact Crown Language in James

Ancient runners received crowns made from leaves, yet James describes a crown that never fades, symbolizing lasting life and joy with God beyond any short-lived prize.

FAQ

Why does James connect endurance with a “crown of life”?

Endurance shows real trust in God, not just nice words. Long obedience through hard moments reveals love for Jesus and leads toward deeper joy, both now and forever.

🚫🍭Wait, So God Doesn’t Set Cookie Traps? Good to Know! ✨

Guess what the Bible says (and this is super important, so I made a doodle poster about it):

“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.” — James 1:13 (KJV)

At first, I thought temptation was, like, God setting up a super sneaky obstacle course… with glittery cupcakes and surprise mud puddles. But Daddy said nope! God doesn’t tempt us at all. He said those tricky temptations come from our own desires—like wanting the last pancake even if someone else hasn’t had any yet (oops).

Ariel asked, “So… if it’s not God testing us, who is it?” And Daddy said, “Sometimes it’s just us. Our own hearts can want silly things, and we have to learn to choose what’s right.”

Then Yaya (a.k.a. Queen of Kind Wisdom) said, “God is always good. He never wants us to mess up—He wants to help us grow strong, like spiritual superheroes.” 🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏼‍♂️

That made me think really hard (like the thinking face I make when chewing string cheese). Sometimes I want something just because it looks fun or shiny, but it’s not actually good for me—or anyone else. So, when I feel pulled toward something wrong, it’s not a God test… it’s a me choice.

“God doesn’t set traps—He sends help!” 🐰💪

Now I try to pause when I feel tempted and ask God for help. I imagine He’s sending me a whisper or a “watch out!” note through Fluffernutter. Sometimes it even feels like God is giving me a little invisible nudge back to the right path—like a holy bunny bump!

🧠 Think-About-It Time!

Can you think of a time when God gave you strength to do what’s right?

Have you ever felt tempted and blamed something or someone else?

What helps you stop and ask God for help before making a decision?

Family Activity — Temptation Trail Map

Activity turns James 1:13–15 into a simple visual map so kids see how temptation grows and how God helps at every step.

  1. Grab paper and draw four boxes in a row: “Desire,” “Pulled In,” “Choice,” “Result.”
  2. Pick a kid-safe example, like sneaking extra screen time or taking candy before permission.
  3. Talk through what happens in each box, then write one way to invite God’s help at that stage.
  4. Finish by adding a small crown doodle near the final box as a reminder of the “crown of life.”

FAQ

Does temptation itself count as sin?

Temptation invites hearts toward sin yet does not equal sin by itself; choices made after that invitation decide whether obedience or disobedience follows.

Young man at a forked path looking at angels and demons in the sky, symbolizing a choice between fear and faith.

🛑🍬 The Danger of the Cookie That Tricks You!

The Bible gives us a serious warning—kind of like a big, bold “CAUTION” sign for our hearts:

“Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.” — James 1:15 (KJV)

Whoa. That verse made me pause mid-marshmallow. 🫣

So Daddy explained it like this: when we say yes to temptation, even just once, it can start a trail of wrong choices—like stepping on one jelly bean and then slipping into a whole candy avalanche! 🍭➡️🍬➡️💥

Ariel said, “So one bad choice leads to another?” and Daddy nodded. “Yes! But here’s the best part—God always gives us an exit sign. If we trust Him, He’ll help us escape before we fall too far.”

Then Yaya (who I think used to wrestle dragons in her youth) said, “Temptation might look like it promises something awesome, but it’s a fake. Only God’s way leads to real joy that doesn’t disappear when the sparkle wears off.”

So I thought about it a lot. And then I said, “It’s like when you open a treasure chest, but it’s filled with rocks… and you realize Mr. Fluffernutter was right all along because he told you to follow the map with the golden heart.”

“Temptation wears a disguise—God’s path wears the crown.” 👑

Now I know resisting temptation isn’t just about saying “no” to something wrong… it’s about saying a super brave, sparkly YES to God’s better plan! Every time we do, our hearts grow closer to Him, like stepping stones that light up with every faithful step.

🧠 Think-About-It Time!

What do you think God’s path looks like? Can you draw it?

Have you ever been tricked by something that seemed good but wasn’t?

What helps you remember to ask God for help before making a decision?

Fun Fact No Shifting Shadows

Bible translators describe God as having “no variableness” or “shadow of turning,” showing that God’s character stays steady even when feelings swing all over the place.

FAQ

How can children spot “counterfeit” gifts that look good but lead toward sin?

Questions help a lot, such as “Does this choice match God’s Word, show love, and leave peace afterward?” Counterfeit options usually hide truth, hurt others, or require secrecy.

Biblical characters holding glowing gifts under a banner that says “Every Good Gift Comes from God.”

🎁✨God’s Treasure Chest: No Batteries (or Candy Bribes) Required!

So here’s the most beautiful thing the Bible says—and I even put a sticker heart next to it in my Bible journal:

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.” — James 1:17 (KJV)

WOW. That means all the really amazing stuff—like hugs, puppies, pancakes, forgiveness, and sunsets that look like cotton candy—come straight from God!

Daddy explained that when we feel tempted, it’s usually because something in our brain says, “Hey! You’re missing out!” But temptation is a tricky trickster. It offers fake treasure when we’ve already got the real treasure right in our hearts.

Ariel asked (in her extra-wise voice), “So when I feel tempted, I should just remember what God already gave me?” And Daddy said, “YES! Because when we trust in God’s goodness, the temptation starts to feel kinda…meh.”

Then Yaya said, “God’s gifts don’t wear off. They fill you up in the best way.” Like the warm feeling you get when someone shares their last cookie with you just because they love you. 💕

“When your heart’s already full of God’s gifts, temptation runs out of room.”

So now, when I feel like sneaking an extra bedtime snack (even though I already had two), I pause. I think about all the good things God already gave me today. Mommy’s snuggles. Bash’s wiggly tail. The sunny spot where Fluffernutter and I played leaf detectives. 🌿🔎

And suddenly? That snack doesn’t seem so powerful anymore. Because my real treasure chest is packed with peace, love, joy, and lots of Jesus.

🏆✨Alice’s Faith Challenge: Operation Crown Sparkle!

Okay, friends! I’ve got a super serious (and super silly) challenge for you this week. I call it:

🎉Operation: Crown Sparkle🎉

This is how we’re going to stand strong against temptation—like superhero knights with glitter shields and hearts full of God’s promises!

🎨 Try a New Joy-Filled Hobby

When temptation comes sneaking around whispering “You need more to be happy,” stomp your foot and shout, “Not today, marshmallow mischief!”

Instead, do something exciting and God-happy like:

Painting an exploding rainbow volcano 🌋🎨

Baking gratitude muffins (with extra joy sprinkles!)

Learning a dance and pretending it’s how King David danced before the Lord! 💃

🌳 Explore God’s Creation

Plan a fun outing with your favorite people—family, friends, or even your stuffed bunny brigade—and go adventuring!

Walk in nature and try to spot 5 gifts from God: a funny-shaped cloud, a giggling stream, a squirrel doing ninja flips…

Visit a local event and thank God for the people and moments around you.

📝 Make a “Blessing List”

Here’s the big one:

“Every good gift comes from above…” — James 1:17

So write them down! All the blessings. Big ones. Tiny ones. Even ones that smell like pancakes. 🥞

Then keep that list nearby. Whenever temptation says, “You need more,” whisper, “Actually, I’ve got everything I need from God already!”

🙏 Pray Like a Mighty Warrior

Feeling tempted to do something sneaky? Pause. Close your eyes. Breathe. Then pray something like:

“God, I feel tempted. Help me choose what’s right and remember Your love is better than anything else!”

Boom. Strength from Heaven. Just like that. 💪✨

👑 Make Your “Crown of Life”

Grab a headband. Or cardboard. Or a pizza box (ask first). Cut out a crown shape and decorate it with powerful words:

Faith

Joy

God’s Promises

Victory

Fluffernutter Approved (optional)

I made mine super sparkly and added pom-poms, pipe cleaners, and stickers of grapes and stars. Because… grapes are blessings too, right?

Let’s make this week a victory parade of faith! 🐰✨ If you join the challenge, let me know what you made! Mr. Fluffernutter and I would LOVE to see your crown, your list of blessings, or even your banana bread experiment (especially if it includes glitter—but not the kind you eat).

💡 Think-About-It Time!

What’s one way you can stand strong against temptation this week?

What are some blessings God has given you that make your heart smile?

How would your “Crown of Life” look? Can you draw or craft it?

FAQ

How frequently should parents bring up temptation and endurance with kids?

Short, regular check-ins around Scripture, bedtime, or mealtimes keep hearts soft and conversations normal, so kids feel safe sharing struggles instead of hiding them.

🌈 The Best Reminder: Trust > Shortcuts

Right before we closed our Bible time (and right before Bash tried to sit on Fluffernutter’s tail again), Yaya shared a story — one of her “super wise and possibly superhero grandma” kind.

She said:

“I was once tempted to take a shortcut during something really hard. It felt like the easy way, but I remembered God’s promises. I stopped, prayed, and chose to trust Him instead. That moment brought me peace and strength I didn’t even know I had!”

WHOA. That story zapped right into my heart like a holy lightning bolt (the soft, glowy kind, not the scary crashy kind ⚡). Because I realized something big:

Temptation always pretends to be helpful. It says, “Psst! This way’s quicker. Easier. More fun!” But God’s way is full of quiet, steady power. It’s where peace grows like sparkly wildflowers and strength grows like roots in deep soil.

“Shortcuts might look shiny—but God’s promises shine forever.”

So now, when I feel pulled toward the easy button (like blaming Bash for something I actually did… oops), I think of Yaya. I think of her stopping to remember God’s love and choosing the better path—even if it was harder.

And that fills me with bravery.

Because God’s goodness? It’s not just better. It’s bestest-ever-forever.

🧠 Think-About-It Time!

What promise from God helps you stand strong?

Have you ever been tempted to take a shortcut?

🌟 Let’s Stand Strong Together (With Bunny Backup!)

Okay, friends… here’s the big finale—the sparkly cherry on top of this whole “resisting temptation” sundae!

God’s love never runs out. His gifts are always good. His strength is more than enough.

So when we feel wobbly or unsure (like when you’re walking across a couch cushion bridge in socks), guess what? We are never alone. God walks with us. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes through a hug. Sometimes through a verse we memorized or a kind word from someone who loves us.

We don’t have to chase every shiny thing or get tricked by temptation’s glittery disguises. We just hold on to faith like a rope swing that doesn’t break—even when the wind blows.

“God’s way might not always look easy—but it’s always good.”

So let’s trust Him with everything.

Let’s wake up grateful.

Let’s bounce through our days full of joy, even when the road feels twisty.

Let’s remember that even when things are confusing, God’s plan is never fuzzy to Him.

His light is like a glow-in-the-dark sticker for our souls. ✨

It helps us find the way forward—even when we feel lost.

With jellybean joy and bunny-sized bravery,

Love,

Alice (and Mr. Fluffernutter!) 🐰💕

P.S. Mr. Fluffernutter says:

“Resisting temptation feels even better than carrot cake… and that’s saying A LOT.” 🥕✨
