John 3 KJV Family Bible Lesson

Night Questions. New Life.

Nicodemus came to Jesus by night with questions. Jesus answered with one of the clearest truths in Scripture: we need new life from the Spirit, and God gave His Son so that whosoever believeth in Him should have everlasting life.

Three things to carry into the lesson

  • Read what John says. Nicodemus came by night; John does not tell us why.
  • Follow Jesus' explanation. New birth is the work of the Spirit, not a do-it-yourself reset.
  • Keep Christ at the center. John 3:16 moves from God's love to His Son, believing, and everlasting life.

Walk through the night conversation

A visitor by night

John introduces Nicodemus as "a man of the Pharisees" and "a ruler of the Jews" (John 3:1). Then John tells us something memorable: "The same came to Jesus by night" (John 3:2).

John 3:3 KJV"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Nicodemus first hears those words in a physical way. Jesus keeps teaching until the question becomes much bigger than age or birth: where does spiritual life come from?

Mr. Fluffernutter's question

If you could sit beside Nicodemus for one minute, what would you ask Jesus after hearing the words "born again"?

Born of the Spirit

Jesus explains that this is not another physical birth. In John 3:5-8 He speaks about being born of the Spirit. The source of this new life is God.

John 3:8 KJV"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit."
Guided practice: the breeze observation

Hold a ribbon or thin tissue strip in front of a fan. Watch the ribbon move. You cannot see wind as an object, but you can see its effect.

Now model careful thinking: the fan experiment is an illustration that helps us remember Jesus' words. It is not a test that proves whether the Spirit is present.

That distinction matters. Good Bible study lets the illustration serve the verse, instead of making the illustration say more than Jesus did.

God loved and gave

Jesus does not leave Nicodemus with an abstract puzzle about new birth. He points toward the Son and everlasting life. John 3:14-17 brings the lesson to the heart of the gospel.

John 3:16 KJV"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Loved - God's heart toward the world Gave - His only begotten Son Believeth - trust directed toward Him Life - everlasting life

So "born again" is not Bible language for "be a little nicer" or "invent a new version of yourself." Jesus is teaching about life God gives, and He places believing in the Son at the center of the promise.

Follow Nicodemus through John

Three connected scenes of Nicodemus in John 3, John 7, and John 19

The nighttime conversation is not the last time John names Nicodemus. Later, when leaders are arguing about Jesus, Nicodemus asks:

John 7:51 KJV"Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?"

Then after Jesus' crucifixion, John says Nicodemus came with myrrh and aloes for the burial (John 19:39-42).

That makes his story especially useful for kids who ask big questions. Scripture gives us room to watch, read, and keep learning before we rush to fill every silence.

Family mission: notice, explain, master

Daddy Ryan, Ariel, Alice, and Mr. Fluffernutter gathered for a warm family Bible discussion
  1. Teach back: Explain the difference between physical birth and being born of the Spirit.
  2. Evidence check: Say one fact John gives about Nicodemus and one thing John does not explain.
  3. Read aloud: Read John 3:16 and listen for the words loved, gave, believeth, and life.
  4. Pray: Thank God for giving His Son and ask for help to trust and obey His Word.
Mastery check
1. Why did Nicodemus come at night?
2. Who gives the new birth Jesus describes?
3. What did God give in John 3:16?

Family questions

Does John tell us why Nicodemus visited at night?

No. John 3:2 tells us that he came by night, but it does not state his reason.

What does "born again" mean in this lesson?

Jesus explains new birth in connection with being born of the Spirit (John 3:5-8). It is spiritual life from God, not another physical birth or merely trying harder.

Where does John 3:16 fit?

Jesus' conversation moves toward the Son, believing, and everlasting life. John 3:16 shows God's love in giving His only begotten Son.

From Alice: I love that Nicodemus brought a real question to Jesus. You do not have to pretend every Bible question is easy. Read carefully, ask bravely, and let God's Word tell you what is true.

Love, Alice - with one very curious bunny nearby.
