Guarding the Gospel: A Kid’s Guide to Bravery

By Alice

So… something very serious happened at breakfast. Like, heart-thumpy, cocoa-spilling serious.

Mommy asked, “Girls, do you know what it means to guard the gospel?”

And Ariel—who’s basically a walking library in sneakers—said, “It’s from 2 Timothy. It means standing up for God’s truth with love, even when it’s hard.”

I blinked at her. “Like with a sword and shield?” I asked, holding Fluffernutter up like he was already mid-battle. He nodded. (Well, I made him nod. Same thing.)

Poppy laughed from the kitchen. “Maybe more like with kindness and courage,” he said, “the kind that shines even when it’s scary.”

Which is when I gasped very dramatically.

“WAIT,” I shouted. “Are you saying we’re on a secret bunny mission to protect the sparkliest treasure of all time?!”

Ariel rolled her eyes, but then smiled. She always does when I turn breakfast into an epic tale.

So that’s how it started—our mission to guard the gospel with love. Not with grumpiness. Not with loud bossy words. But with brave hearts, sticker-covered faith, and a whole lot of prayer-powered bubble armor. Because, you see, the gospel isn’t just a bunch of words in a book.

It’s the best news ever, with hugs inside.

It tells the story of Jesus—the bravest, kindest, most love-filled Hero of all time—and how He never leaves us, even if our socks are mismatched or our courage feels crumbly.

And if that’s not worth guarding with jellybean determination, I don’t know what is.

So grab your shield of kindness and your Bible verse compass—Fluffernutter and I are already marching (well, hopping) ahead.

Let’s get gospel-guarding, giggle-powered, and grace-filled together!

🎁 What Does It Mean to Guard the Gospel with Love?

Okay, so picture this: a treasure chest made of rainbow wood and glittery gold hinges. Inside? Not coins. Not jellybeans (though that would be cool). Inside is something waaaay more powerful—the gospel!

That’s what Paul was talking about in 2 Timothy 1:14 when he told Timothy to guard the gospel like a sacred treasure, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Yaya, who always makes big ideas feel cozy, leaned in and said,

“Imagine having a super special recipe that fills people with hope, joy, and warm snuggly faith. That’s the gospel—it’s not a secret snack; it’s a gift you share, carefully and lovingly.”

I gasped. “Like a magical banana bread that makes your heart do happy flips?!”

She nodded, smiling. (Probably because I said banana bread.)

Ariel got that squinty-thinking face. “Wait… so we protect it and give it away?”

Daddy smiled the way he does when he’s about to say something super wise.

“Exactly. Guarding the gospel with love means we don’t water it down or hide it. We share it bravely—even when it’s hard—because the truth about Jesus is worth telling.”

Then he pointed to the candles on the kitchen table.

“Think of it like this: one candle lights another, and soon the whole room shines. That’s how the gospel spreads—one brave, loving heart at a time.”

I whispered to Fluffernutter, “We’re officially sparkle-candle gospel guards now.”

He agreed. (Because he always agrees when it involves light, love, or pastries.)

💬 Bunny-Sized Questions for Big-Hearted Thinkers:

  • Have you ever had to be brave when telling someone about Jesus?
  • What’s one way you could shine your gospel-light this week?
  • If you made a recipe for the Good News, what ingredients would it have?

📖 Memory Verse Reminder:

“Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.” — 2 Timothy 1:14

💪 Don’t Be Ashamed: Be Bold About the Gospel

Okay, okay—so this part is extra-sparkly important.

Paul told Timothy, “Hey! Don’t be embarrassed about the gospel. And definitely don’t be embarrassed that I’m in prison because I shared it!” (That’s my very wiggly version of 2 Timothy 1:8.)

Yaya explained it with her soft-wisdom voice while slicing fruit:

“Sometimes people don’t understand why we follow Jesus. They might think it’s silly or strange. And in those moments, staying quiet can feel easier. But Paul reminds us that telling others about Jesus is worth every challenge.”

I stared at my orange slice. “Wait… so being brave about the gospel is like eating sour candy in front of the whole lunchroom and saying, ‘I love this face-wrinkling stuff!’?”

Ariel made a giggle-snort. “Kind of! Only it’s not about candy. It’s about love and truth.”

Then Daddy chimed in, stirring something delicious-smelling:

“When you stand strong in your faith, you show others what really matters. It’s like being a lighthouse during a storm—your light helps others find their way.”

My eyes got big. “So… we’re Jesus lighthouses with bunny beacons?”

Fluffernutter saluted.

Being bold about the gospel doesn’t mean shouting. It means shining. It means choosing Jesus even when it’s hard, awkward, or uncomfy. Like when everyone laughs, or your voice squeaks, or your friend says, “That’s weird.” But guess what?

Your story might help someone else find hope, courage, or even forever-sparkly faith.

💡 Gospel Light Check-In:

  • Have you ever felt shy about your faith? What did you do?
  • Can you think of someone who stood up for their beliefs and inspired you?
  • What would your gospel “lighthouse” look like if you drew it?

📖 Memory Verse Moment

🛞 Hold Fast to God’s Truth (Like It’s a Bike Handle During a Loop-de-Loop)

Okay so, BIG NEWS: the Bible says we should hold fast to God’s truth. And no, that doesn’t mean squishing it in your fists like slime. It means knowing it, trusting it, and not letting go, even when your brain goes wobbly or the world gets super noisy.

Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:13,

“Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”

Yaya paused the story and said,

“God’s Word is like a lighthouse map. If we don’t study it, we might follow the wrong glowy thing and end up in a sea of silly ideas.”

I blinked. “Like… if a firefly tricked us into thinking it was a star?”

She nodded seriously. “Exactly.”

Ariel, who once actually taught me how not to crash my bike into a mailbox, said,

“It’s like holding tight to your handlebars. Even when the road’s all bumpy and twisty, if you know what you’re doing and keep your grip, you won’t wipe out.”

I tilted my head. “Wait, so the Bible is like… training wheels for your brain?”

She giggled. “Or like a truth-seatbelt.”

Then Daddy said,

“We study the Bible so we can share God’s truth clearly, help others stand strong, and not fall for lies that sound sweet but lead nowhere good.”

I looked at Fluffernutter and whispered, “We need a Bible-sidecar on our tricycle, just in case.”

He gave me a very wise nod. (Probably because he already has one in his imagination.)

🧠 Truth-Tastic Thinking Time:

  • What’s one Bible verse you’re holding on to this week?
  • Have you ever heard something that sounded true, but wasn’t?
  • How do you practice telling the difference between God’s truth and confusing opinions?

📖 Memory Verse Sparkle:

🦸‍♀️ Rely on God’s Strength (Even If You Feel Like Jelly)

So guess what? You don’t have to be a superhero to be brave for Jesus. Nope. Not even a little.

Paul reminded Timothy to be strong, not with giant arm muscles or a cape made of lightning bolts, but by learning how to rely on God’s strength. (That’s in 2 Timothy 1:8–9, by the way.)

Daddy told us while flipping pancakes,

“We don’t have to be strong all by ourselves. God gives us His strength to face whatever comes.”

I squinted at Fluffernutter. “So like… if I’m scared to tell someone I believe in Jesus, God gives me bravery beans?”

Yaya smiled and said something even better:

“It’s like walking with a big, strong friend who holds your hand whenever you feel wobbly. Even when you’re nervous, God’s right there with you.”

Ariel nodded. “And His strength helps you turn hard moments into God stories—like when fear turns into courage, and you get to say, ‘God helped me through that!’”

I imagined God as the hugest bunny bodyguard of all time—sparkly eyes, armor made of light, and a giant umbrella to block out the yucky stuff.

So yeah, sometimes we might shake like jello, but God’s power is rock-solid. That means we can keep sharing His love, even if our voices quiver or our bunny ears flop a little.

🐾 Strong-Hearted Wonder Questions:

  • What does “God’s strength” feel like to you?
  • Can you remember a time when you were scared but asked God to help?
  • What’s one brave thing you could do this week to share God’s love?

📝 How I Plan to Guard the Gospel With Love (AKA: Alice’s Brave Bunny Plan)

Sooo… after all this talk about Paul, Timothy, candles, strength, and Bible-bike handlebars, I made a super-duper serious plan. (Okay, and it has sparkles and stickers.)

Fluffernutter helped. Obviously.

🎯 Step 1: Learn God’s Word Like a Treasure Map

I pinky-promised myself to read my Bible every day—even if it’s just one verse during snack time. I’ll memorize God’s words like secret kingdom passwords so that when someone needs hope or hugs, I can share His truth right away.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

🎯 Step 2: Be Brave Like a Bunny With Boots

Even if my tummy flip-flops, I’ll still tell my friends about Jesus. I know some of them might think it’s weird. (One thinks “gospel” is a kind of pasta.) But I’ll keep talking about God’s love anyway, because brave faith means sharing even when it feels squiggly inside.

“Let your light so shine before men…” — Matthew 5:16

🎯 Step 3: Trust God’s Strength (Even When My Voice Squeaks)

I’m gonna pray big. Like… ask-for-giant-God-courage big. I’ll pray when I feel nervous, or when I forget the right words, or when my brain says “maybe just stay quiet.” Because guess what? I’m never alone. Not even for a second. God is with me. Always.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13

🐰 Your Turn! What’s YOUR Gospel Guarding Plan?

  • How will you guard the gospel with love this week?
  • Is there someone you can pray for or encourage today?
  • What’s one verse you can learn that helps you stay strong in your faith?

🎨 Craft Time: Make Your Own Gospel Treasure Chest! 🗝️✨

Okay, okay—this one’s gonna be so cool you might actually squeal. Wanna know how to guard and share God’s Word with love and glitter glue?

You make a Gospel Treasure Chest, of course!

Because the gospel isn’t just words—it’s sparkly, golden, life-saving treasure. (Fluffernutter says it’s even better than jellybeans. And he never says that.)

🧺 What You’ll Need:

  • A small box or container (shoebox, jewelry box, or even a lunchbox!).
  • Paper and markers or crayons.
  • Stickers, buttons, ribbons, or anything fun to decorate.
  • Optional: glitter, pom-poms, and big ideas!

🖌️ How to Make It Magical:

  1. Decorate your treasure chest!
Cover your box in gospel-y goodness. Add crosses, hearts, sunshine beams, and swirly reminders of God’s love. Don’t forget a name! (Mine’s called “The Bunny Vault of Holy Hugs.”)
  2. Write truth-treasures on slips of paper.
These are your Bible Verse Gems. Try ones like: “God so loved the world…” — John 3:16
“Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6
  3. Tuck your verses and drawings inside!
Every day, pick one from the chest. Read it. Think about it. Maybe even ask:
“Who can I share this with today?”

You can also add your own doodles, prayers, or truth-scrolls. I added one that says, “Jesus loves you more than 10,000 marshmallows” because… that feels true.

💬 Talk & Treasure Together:

  • What’s one verse you want to treasure in your heart this week?
  • Who could you share God’s Word with love today?
  • How does it feel knowing the Bible is filled with real treasure for your soul?

📖 Bonus Verse to Hide in Your Chest

🙏 A Prayer to Be Bold for the Gospel (With Fluffernutter’s Ears Folded in Prayer)

Last night, Fluffernutter and I had a very serious (and slightly giggly) prayer moment. I even lit a pretend candle made out of a banana peel and a paperclip. (He said it was holy enough.)

Here’s our bedtime prayer:

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for trusting us with the best message in the universe—Your love and salvation!
Please help our hearts be brave and our feet stay steady as we walk with You.
Help us hold tight to Your Word like it’s a glowing treasure map, and teach us how to share it kindly and boldly with everyone—especially those feeling lonely or lost.
When things feel hard or scary, fill us with Your strength.
Help us remember we’re never, ever alone—not even for one bunny-hop.
In Your mighty and loving name,
Amen. 🐰✨
