Chapter 1 of 6

A household in need

A nobleman begins the uphill journey from Capernaum to seek Jesus while his sick son rests at home.

Jesus returned to Cana of Galilee, where He had made the water wine. In Capernaum, a nobleman’s son was sick. When the father heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went to Him.

“And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.” John 4:46 KJV
Notice: The father has position, but he cannot command sickness away. His need sends him to Jesus.

Chapter 2 of 6

An urgent request

The father begged Jesus to come down and heal his son, “for he was at the point of death.” Jesus answered a crowd that wanted signs before belief. The account keeps our attention on Jesus, not on human effort.

“Sir, come down ere my child die.” John 4:49 KJV
Wonder together: What does this father’s request teach us about bringing a real need to Jesus?

Chapter 3 of 6

The word that sends him home

Jesus speaks with compassion and authority to the nobleman in Cana.
“Go thy way; thy son liveth.” John 4:50 KJV

Jesus does not travel to Capernaum. He speaks. The father has no report from home yet—but he believes the word Jesus has spoken and goes his way.

Faith rests on Jesus: This is not positive thinking or magic. The powerful Son of God gives a trustworthy word.

Chapter 4 of 6

The servants bring evidence

Servants hurry along the road to tell the nobleman that his son lives.

As the father travels home, his servants meet him with joyful news: “Thy son liveth.” He asks when the boy began to recover. They answer that the fever left yesterday at the seventh hour.

Chapter 5 of 6

A whole household believes

“So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.” John 4:53 KJV

The exact hour confirms the authority of Jesus’ word. The sign is not a trick and the father is not the savior. Jesus gives life, and the sign leads the household to believe.

John calls this the second miracle Jesus did after coming from Judaea into Galilee. Every sign invites us to see who Jesus is.

Jesus sees the need. His authority reaches farther than we can travel. His word is worthy of trust.
