🏡 Trust, Squirrels, and Sandwiches: A Homeschool Day We’ll Never Forget

Today’s homeschool adventure burst with color, creativity, cuddles—and a talking banana or two. Ariel invented him during breakfast. She named him Sir BananaPants, gave him a monocle made of a Cheerio, and declared him the official narrator of our school day. Meanwhile, Alice insisted he rode a gummy bear horse to grammar battle. And thus, our day began with side quests, story sparks, and smoothie-scented imagination. Though our official first day of school isn’t until Monday, we jumped into a joyful preview packed with storytelling, scripture, and side quests (a.k.a. Roblox and peanut butter sandwiches).

Here’s a look inside our day of learning, laughter, and living life as a family—with Fluffernutter, glitter glue, and a bit of Proverbs wisdom leading the way. 🙌🐿️

☀️ Morning Devotional – Trust in the Lord (Even if You’re a Squirrel)

We began our day with a heart-settling memory verse:

Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

After reciting the verse together, we read a silly story about Chipper, a squirrel who tried to build a zipline using spaghetti noodles. (Spoiler: it did not end well for the spaghetti.)

The girls laughed, reflected, and then created their own beautiful coloring pages inspired by the verse. Ariel colored her squirrel in joyful pastels, and Alice made hers a full rainbow superhero.

Ariel (4th Grade): Writer in the Making

Ariel tackled a 3-paragraph story assignment with:

  • A beginning (setup)
  • A middle (conflict)
  • An end (resolution)
  • Plus strong dialogue and adjectives

Her story explored kindness, conflict, and resolution—and she delivered it like a seasoned author. The plot followed a shy hedgehog who wanted to make friends but kept accidentally poking others. With the help of a clever owl, the hedgehog learned how to hug with a pillow—and made lots of friends by the end. Ariel’s dialogue between the animals was full of personality, and her descriptive language made us all smile. Later, she crushed her Grammar Gorillas quiz on nouns, pronouns, and verbs. Go, Ariel!

Alice (Kindergarten): Draw, Tell, and Shine

Alice started with a story sequencing worksheet, drawing what happened first, next, and last in our morning tale. She narrated each part with so much expression that even the crayons were impressed.

Next up, CVC word magic! Alice matched and labeled words like cat, sun, bug, and hat with adorable illustrations—her drawing of a bug had sparkly antennae and heart-shaped wings, and she let out the sweetest giggle when she shouted, “I found the hat!” after matching it correctly. Her joy was so genuine, we all clapped like she had just solved a mystery.

🥚 Lunchtime + Roblox Break

Midday brought sandwiches, silliness, and Roblox on the projector. Alice nibbled while watching her avatar twirl in game. Ariel kicked back upstairs, alternating between battles and grammar boosts. Homeschool snack breaks hit different.

🌟 What We Learned (Besides How to Build a Squirrel Zipline)

  • Ariel is refining her writing and grammar with creativity and confidence.
  • Alice thrives when activities are playful, visual, and full of color.
  • Shared devotionals set the perfect tone for family learning.

Our homeschool rhythm doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be rooted in love, truth, and trust—in each other, and in God. That same trust we read about this morning in Proverbs 3:5 carried us through each activity, each laugh, and even each learning hiccup. When we lean not on our own understanding but follow His lead—even in spelling and squirrel stories—amazing things happen.
