Key Takeaways:

  • Freedom in Christ grows from what Jesus already finished, not from personal performance.
  • Grace replaces heavy rule-keeping with a living friendship that reshapes desires from the inside out.
  • Spiritual battles already sit under Christ’s victory, so hearts stand firm instead of living in fear.
  • Legalism behaves like a shadow that covers joy; Christ shines as the real substance behind every symbol.
  • Families can build simple daily rhythms that remind everyone, “Already loved, already forgiven, already free.”

It all started during Bible time — the cozy kind with warm socks, cinnamon toast, and Bash snoring like a tiny bear. Mommy read, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free,” and something inside me went zing!

I asked, “So… does that mean Jesus breaks invisible chains with love superpowers?”
Yaya smiled. “Exactly.”

In my imagination, sin is like sticky jelly that clings to your heart and keeps you from dancing. But Jesus? He melts it. Not with lightning bolts — with grace. Real grace. The kind that makes your soul feel floaty and brave.

So this post is all about that kind of freedom — the kind Jesus gives when we stop trying to be perfect and start letting Him hold us. If your heart’s felt heavy or tangled, you’re not alone.

Let’s learn how to live light again — free, forgiven, and full of His love.

TL;DR

Colossians 2 shows hearts moved from spiritual death to life in Christ, forgiven and made new by grace rather than traditions or extra rules. Freedom in Christ means living from His finished victory, not chasing God’s approval, so families rest, repent, and walk forward with courage.

🕊️ Freedom from Sin: A New Beginning with Jesus

“In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.” (Colossians 2:11)

We were all squished together on the couch — me, Ariel, Bash, and Fluffernutter (who insisted on sitting like a royal sage on top of my head). Daddy read this verse and said something that made my brain do flips: “It’s not about old rules anymore.”

Ariel, who is basically the queen of good questions, asked, “So… we don’t have to follow those old law rules like before?”

Daddy nodded. “Right. Jesus didn’t just add something new — He transformed us completely. Like a heart upgrade. Our old sinful nature? Snip! Gone!”

Yaya added, “Sin doesn’t get to boss you around anymore. Jesus set us free to live for God.”

💡 What Does That Really Mean?

This verse describes a heart-change only Jesus can do — a deep spiritual makeover that removes the power of sin and gives a brand-new life in Him.

I imagined my heart looking like a tangled-up knot of spaghetti and shame. But when Jesus came in — He didn’t just untangle it — He made it new. Like giving me a sparkly, squishy heart that beats with grace instead of guilt.

Being set free by Jesus is like having invisible chains fall right off. You don’t even know how heavy they were until they’re gone. It’s like waking up from a bad dream and realizing the sun’s been shining the whole time (but not real sun because I’m not allowed to say that in blog metaphors anymore 😜).

“Jesus didn’t just forgive you — He transformed you.”
– Mr. Fluffernutter’s Whisper of the Week

🦋 A Fresh Start in Christ

Life in Christ feels like stepping out of old, scratchy clothes and into a brand-new outfit of grace, love, and freedom that He picked just for you.

When we follow Jesus, we’re not dragging around our old mistakes like a backpack full of bricks. We’re new. Shiny. Unstuck.

Like a butterfly bursting out of a cocoon that used to feel too tight.

That means today — right now — we can live with hope instead of fear, joy instead of shame, and purpose instead of pretending.

We don’t have to earn His love. We just live in it. And the best part? We get to share that love with others who still think they have to carry the heavy stuff. We can say, “Guess what? You can be free too!”

🌱 Think About It…

  • What would it look like to start your day remembering you’re already free in Christ?
  • Can you think of a time when you felt stuck or weighed down — and then something (or Someone) helped you feel free?

Fun Bible Fact: Colossians sits inside Paul’s “prison letters,” written while he faced chains on the outside, even though his heart celebrated deep freedom on the inside through Christ.

FAQ

How can kids know they really have freedom in Christ?

Hearts can trust Christ’s promise more than feelings. Anyone who turns to Him in faith carries His forgiveness completely, even on nervous days when emotions feel wobbly.

A wooden cross surrounded by blooming flowers and lush greenery, bathed in radiant light filtering through the trees.

💖 Forgiveness Through the Cross

“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, nailing it to His cross.” (Colossians 2:14)

We were sitting around the kitchen table, and Mommy had just passed out warm blueberry muffins when Daddy read this verse. Mr. Fluffernutter was already halfway through his muffin (in my imagination, of course — bunnies don’t get blueberry unless it’s pretend). Then Daddy said something that made me pause mid-bite.

He said: “Before Jesus, our sins were like a long list of debts we couldn’t pay.”

Ariel squinted and asked, “So… like a giant bill?

Daddy smiled. “Even bigger. Imagine carrying a backpack stuffed with every mistake, every wrong thought, every time you said something mean or forgot to pray.”

That made me gulp. My backpack would be stuffed with things like yelling when I lost a game, hiding Ariel’s favorite pen (again), and once accidentally blaming Bash for a mess I made (sorry, buddy).

🎒 Jesus Carried What We Couldn’t

Every wrong choice, every heavy “oops,” and every guilty feeling landed on Jesus at the cross so you don’t have to carry that backpack anymore.

But then Daddy said something beautiful:

“Jesus took that heavy list, nailed it to the cross, and erased it completely.”

ERASED. Like… completely vanished!

Not like when I try to use an eraser and it just smudges everything worse.

Nope — Jesus didn’t smudge. He canceled it with His love.

Yaya leaned in with her special story voice and said, “When Jesus said, ‘It is finished,’ He didn’t mean ‘almost done.’ He meant DONE. Forever. You’re free now.”

I imagined Jesus holding my list — the one with every oops and uh-oh and “I didn’t mean to.” And then He smiled, held up His hands, and said, “This one’s Mine now.”

And just like that… the list was gone.

“Jesus didn’t just forgive us — He carried away the weight we couldn’t lift.”
— Mr. Fluffernutter, Bunny of Redemption

🕊️ Forgiven and Free

When Jesus says you are forgiven, that word stretches across your past, present, and future like a giant banner of mercy and love.

Sometimes I still feel like I need to make up for things — like I have to try really, really hard to be good so Jesus will still like me. But this verse? This promise? It says I don’t have to carry that weight anymore.

He already carried it.
He already finished it.
He already loves me.

And that changes everything.

Now I wake up each day with joy, not guilt. Hope, not heaviness. I try to forgive others faster, love deeper, and give grace more often — because I know what it feels like to be loved that way.

💬 Wondering Time…

  • What’s one way you can remind someone else they’re forgiven too?
  • Have you ever felt weighed down by something you did wrong?
  • How would it feel to give Jesus your list — and watch Him tear it up with love?

🎨 Family Activity — “Freedom in Christ” Poster

Families can turn this Bible study into art time using the data worksheet and coloring page.

  1. Print the Freedom in Christ data poster (Colossians 2:11–23) and the coloring page.
  2. Read Colossians 2:11–23 together and circle words that sound like freedom, grace, or victory.
  3. Write those words around the worksheet image, then glue both pages onto a larger poster board.
  4. Let kids decorate chains turning into hearts, open locks, and crosses that remind everyone of Christ’s finished work.
  5. Hang the poster somewhere busy at home so eyes see a daily reminder: “Already free in Christ.”

FAQ

Does freedom in Christ mean trying no longer matters?

Effort still matters, only the reason behind that effort shifts. Obedience becomes a thankful response to finished forgiveness rather than a payment plan for earning it.

Dramatic scene of spiritual battle with a warrior angel facing a dark demon, representing the triumph of light over darkness.

🛡️ Victory Over Sin and Darkness

“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:15)

During our morning Bible time, right after Bash tried to eat my crayon, Daddy read this verse out loud. His voice sounded strong, like he was telling the story of a hero who did something no one else could.

He looked at us and said, “Jesus defeated sin, death, and all the powers of darkness when He died and rose again.”

Ariel raised her hand like she was in school and asked, “So… that means Jesus won the ultimate victory?”

Daddy smiled like the answer was his favorite truth: “Yes! Because of His victory, we don’t have to live in fear anymore. Jesus is already the Champion!”

🌟 Jesus Already Won (So We Don’t Have to Be Scared)

Every dark power that looked big and scary shrank in front of Jesus’ victory. He already won the battle, so hearts can rest instead of panic.

Yaya leaned forward with her soft, brave voice and added,

“Living in Christ’s victory gives us courage. His triumph is our triumph.”

That made me feel like I had invisible armor — like faith glittered on my heart. No matter what tries to scare me — shadows, sad days, or big feelings that feel like too much — Jesus has already walked ahead of me and won.

Sometimes, when I’m scared of the dark or when I mess up, I imagine Jesus holding a torch so big and bright, it makes the darkness run away like it’s late for dinner.

“Jesus didn’t just defeat the darkness — He made a parade out of it!”
— Mr. Fluffernutter’s Victory Scroll

💪 A Life Lit by His Light

When Jesus’ victory shines into your life, everyday moments turn into little places where His courage and joy glow through you.

Knowing that Jesus is victorious doesn’t mean life is always easy…

But it does mean I’m never alone.

When things go wrong or scary thoughts show up, I don’t have to panic. I get to whisper, “Jesus already won,” and take a brave step forward. Like when I apologized to Ariel even though I didn’t feel like it, or when I prayed out loud even though my tummy felt wiggly inside.

That’s the kind of courage His victory gives — the kind that shines, even on cloudy heart-days.

🎉 Living Boldly in His Triumph

Freedom in Christ means you don’t walk through life hoping the ending turns out okay — you walk knowing the story already ends in His victory.

Jesus’ resurrection isn’t just a “remember that happened” kind of story. It’s a right now kind of power. It means I can live joyfully and shine brightly — even when things feel hard. His strength is in me, and it’s not going away. Ever.

So I’m learning to walk in that light:

  • To share the good news like it’s the best story ever (because it is!).
  • To love people who are hard to love.
  • To giggle more, even when things are confusing.
  • To step out in faith like I’m walking on invisible stepping stones held up by heaven.

💬 Let’s Wonder Together…

  • How can you be a light for someone else today?
  • What’s something you’ve been afraid to face — that maybe Jesus already won for you?
  • Can you think of a time when you felt brave because you remembered God’s love?

Fun Bible Fact: Roman victory parades sometimes dragged defeated enemies behind the hero’s chariot. Colossians uses similar language to show Christ leading a triumph over dark powers.

FAQ

Why do struggles continue if Christ already won?

Battles still show up during ordinary days, yet none of them can erase Christ’s finished victory. Believers stand inside that win, trusting His strength while they walk through each struggle.

🌈 Freedom from Legalism: No More Living in the Shadows

“Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday…” (Colossians 2:16)

Bible time was going well until Daddy said the word legalism, and I accidentally whispered, “Is that a kind of dinosaur?” Ariel giggled. Daddy smiled and said, “Nope — it’s when people care more about rules than about their relationship with Jesus.”

Ariel, who always knows the best questions, asked, “So it’s not about following a bunch of rules anymore?”

Daddy said, “Exactly. Jesus fulfilled the law. Now we follow Him — not a rulebook.”

Then Yaya jumped in with one of her golden-nugget-of-wisdom moments:

“Those old rules were like shadows pointing us to Jesus. But now that we have Him, we don’t need the shadows anymore. He’s the Light.”

☀️ Jesus Is the Light, Not the Shadow

Rules, holy days, and special traditions can be beautiful, yet they only work like shadows pointing to the real Light — Jesus Himself.

That made my brain feel like a rainbow exploded (in the good way).

Imagine this: trying to hug a shadow. You can see it, but it doesn’t hug back. That’s what following rules without knowing Jesus feels like.

But now? Jesus isn’t a shadow. He’s the real thing — the warm, loving, light-of-the-world Savior who actually holds your hand when you pray and listens even when your words get jumbly.

We don’t have to tiptoe through life, trying to follow every little rule perfectly. We get to dance in the freedom of grace — even if we trip over our own feet sometimes.

“Jesus didn’t come to make new rules — He came to make us new.”
— Mr. Fluffernutter, Former Shadow-Chaser

🎉 Living Joyfully in Relationship, Not Rules

Real freedom means walking with Jesus as a Friend and Savior, not just checking boxes on a spiritual chore chart.

When we try to earn love through rule-following, we end up tired and tangled. But Jesus says, “You’re already Mine. Let’s walk together.”

That’s not a checklist. That’s a friendship.

I don’t read my Bible because I have to — I read it because I want to know my forever-friend Jesus better. I don’t pray because it’s a rule. I pray because I miss Him when I don’t.

And that, friends, is freedom:

  • Not a shadow.
  • Not a chore chart.
  • But a love so real it changes how we live.

💬 Let’s Wonder Together…

  • What’s one way we can help others step into the light of Jesus’ love this week?
  • What’s something you do because you love Jesus — not because it’s a rule?
  • Have you ever felt stuck trying to be “perfect”? How did it feel when someone reminded you of grace?

Fun Bible Fact: Many early believers came from backgrounds full of detailed feast calendars. Paul reminds them that every feast and festival pointed forward to Christ as the main event.

FAQ

How can families spot when rules start feeling like legalism?

Legalism often shows up when rules create fear, pride, or comparison instead of love and peace. Helpful rules protect hearts while still pointing everyone back to Christ’s mercy.

🎨 Alice’s Faith Challenge!

Want to live in the freedom of Christ this week? Let’s turn our faith into FUN! Here are some of my favorite ways to celebrate Jesus and practice living free — like, glitter-and-butterflies kind of free. 🐰✨

💛 Start Your Day with Gratitude

Tiny thank-yous whispered to God in the morning can turn a regular day into a freedom-filled adventure with Him.

Every morning this week, say thank you to Jesus for something that makes you feel light and free! It could be something big like, “You forgave me!” or something small like, “This muffin is amazing.”

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1

Write it down in your journal, draw a picture, or say it out loud with Fluffernutter (he’s a great listener, even when he’s upside down).

Let’s reflect:

  • What has Jesus set you free from?
  • What makes your heart feel joyful and floaty today?

💖 Acts of Kindness for Jesus

Every small act of kindness quietly whispers, “Jesus loves you,” into someone’s day.

Jesus’ love sets us free — and when we’re free, we get to share that love like it’s confetti!

Try this:

  • Help a neighbor carry groceries.
  • Make a kindness card for someone who’s sad.
  • Let your sibling go first (even if it’s your turn!).

These tiny kindness missions are BIG in God’s eyes.

“Serve one another humbly in love.” — Galatians 5:13

Ask your heart:

  • Who can I surprise with kindness this week?
  • How can I show freedom through love?

🙏 Focus on Friendship with Jesus

Freedom in Christ grows stronger when you remember He calls you friend, not just follower.

Rules are good, but a real relationship with Jesus? That’s everything.

Spend quiet time praying, reading your Bible, and just talking to Jesus like He’s your best friend (because He is!). You don’t need fancy words. Just your heart.

“I have called you friends.” — John 15:15

Maybe you light a candle, play soft music, or cuddle up with your Bible and a stuffed bunny. Whatever helps you feel close.

Wonder this:

  • What would you say to Jesus if you were sitting beside Him right now?
  • How does His friendship make you feel brave?

🌈 Create a “Freedom in Christ” Poster

Turn your wall into a giant reminder that Jesus already set you free.

Grab some markers, stickers, or sparkly stuff and make a poster that shouts “I am FREE in Jesus!”

Write words like:

Use these words on your poster:

  • FORGIVEN
  • LOVED
  • NEW
  • BRAVE
  • JOYFUL

Decorate it with butterflies (because NEW LIFE!), rainbows (because PROMISES!), and hearts (because LOVE!). Stick it on your wall or your fridge or even your bunny’s hideout.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36

✨ Here’s Mine!

My poster looks like a messy, colorful explosion of grace — with big letters, doodles, and little notes about what Jesus has done in my life.

Mine says: “JESUS IS ENOUGH” in sparkly letters that kinda stick to everything. Fluffernutter said it looks “powerfully glittery” — which is basically a Bible compliment. 🌟

Want to do something different?

  • Paint a picture of what freedom feels like.
  • Write a song about grace.
  • Plan a little faith party with your friends to share what God’s done!

🎉 Let’s be bold, creative, and full of faith as we walk in the light of Jesus’ love! If you make a poster, song, prayer jar, or bunny cape for Fluffernutter, I’d love to hear about it! 🐇💕

💬 Let’s Reflect Together…

  • What does freedom in Christ look like in your life?
  • How can you remind yourself that you’re loved, even when you make mistakes?
  • What will YOU create to celebrate the joy of living in God’s grace?

Fun Practice Idea: Families can pick a weekly “Freedom Phrase” from Colossians, write it on sticky notes, and tuck those notes into lunch boxes, mirrors, and notebooks.

FAQ

How can kids remember freedom in Christ during school or busy days?

Short prayers, tiny memory verses, and visual reminders like bracelets or sticky notes keep truth close. Each reminder quietly says, “Christ already holds you,” even in noisy classrooms or crowded schedules.

Encouraging sticky note with the words "You Are Amazing!" surrounded by school supplies and a bright yellow background.

🌟 The Best Reminder

Before we finished our Bible time (and right before Ariel could eat the last blueberry muffin), Yaya shared something really special. Her voice got all soft and story-ish, the way it does when she’s about to say something that makes hearts melt.

She said:

“I used to feel so burdened, trying to follow every rule perfectly. But when I realized Jesus had already done the work for me, I felt so free. Now I live for Him because I love Him—not because I have to.”

And just like that… my brain paused.

Not because I was sleepy (though Fluffernutter was drooling slightly on my knee), but because Yaya’s words hit something big inside me.

💖 Living for Jesus with Love, Not Pressure

Freedom in Christ means your “why” changes from “I have to” into “I get to” because He already finished the hardest part on the cross.

It made me think: What if following Jesus isn’t about checklists and rulebooks… but about friendship and love?

So many people think they have to do all the right things, all the time, or Jesus won’t want to sit beside them anymore. But the truth is—He already loves us. He already paid the price. He already opened the door.

“It is finished.” — John 19:30

That means nothing’s missing.

Not one good deed. Not one perfect prayer. Not even my weirdest Tuesday mistakes.

We don’t live to earn His love — we live because of His love.

“Freedom isn’t about doing everything right. It’s about being right where Jesus wants you — close to Him.”
— Fluffernutter’s Final Bunny Thought

🕊️ Grace Changes Everything

Once grace grabs your heart, even ordinary moments turn into quiet worship — dishes, homework, and playtime included.

When we embrace the freedom we have in Christ, we don’t serve out of fear. We serve because our hearts are full to bursting. Every kind act, every prayer, every giggle we share while loving others — those are our thank yous to Jesus.

I don’t help Ariel because I’m supposed to.

I help her because I love her.

And that’s how I want to love Jesus too.

In His grace, our messy pasts don’t get to boss us around anymore.

Our future is filled with purpose, and our hearts are invited into joyful obedience — the kind that sings, skips, and sometimes wears too much glitter.

💬 Wonder with Me…

  • How might your week look different if you remembered you’re already enough in His eyes?
  • What makes you feel closer to Jesus — rules, or relationship?
  • Can you think of something you used to do out of pressure, but now you do out of love?

Joyful crowd of people holding hands and raising arms toward a glowing sky in a wide open field, celebrating unity and praise.

🌞 Let’s Live in the Freedom Jesus Gives!

Okay friends — deep breath! Let’s live in the big, beautiful, bubble-popping kind of freedom that Jesus gives us! This kind of freedom isn’t just for Sundays or church pews — it’s for mornings with messy hair, rainy days when you feel grumpy, and those awkward moments when you accidentally say “toot” out loud during prayer time.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

💖 What Freedom in Christ Feels Like…

  • It feels like someone took all the guilt and shame you were carrying… and turned it into confetti.
  • It feels like walking barefoot on warm grass, laughing without worrying who’s watching.
  • It feels like being seen by Jesus and still being loved. Like, really loved. Forever kind of loved.

When we know we’re forgiven and never alone, we stop hiding. We start shining.

And guess what? That shining helps others see Jesus too.

“Freedom in Christ is sweeter than carrot cake!”
— Mr. Fluffernutter, Bunny of Boundless Joy 🥕✨

🌈 Be a Light That Dances

Freedom in Christ glows brightest when your joy, kindness, and courage dance into other people’s ordinary moments.

Living in God’s grace doesn’t mean life is always easy-peasy.

It means we don’t face hard things alone.

Jesus already won the victory on the cross — so now, we get to walk in that victory. Boldly. Joyfully. Silly-hat-wearing kind of joyfully, if we want.

So this week, let’s:

  • Laugh without guilt.
  • Forgive like it’s a gift.
  • Love like we’re overflowing.
  • And remind the world that Jesus is enough — and then some.

💌 With All My Heart…

Thanks for reading this super sparkly adventure about freedom in Christ. Let’s keep living this love out loud — with open arms, kind words, and hearts full of grace.

If you see me drawing butterflies on my “Jesus is Enough” poster or whispering Bible verses to Bash, just know I’m still learning too.

Still growing. Still glowing. Still free.

FAQ — Freedom in Christ for Families

Can someone lose freedom in Christ by making mistakes?

Mistakes never surprise Christ, and they do not cancel His finished work. Believers still repent and grow, yet their standing before God rests on Jesus, not on a perfect week.

How early can kids start learning about freedom in Christ?

Simple truths fit even tiny hearts. Short verses, pictures of broken chains, and gentle conversations about forgiveness can begin as soon as kids start asking questions about right and wrong.

What if parents feel more legalistic than free?

Honest parents can bring that heaviness to Christ and ask Him to reshape habits. Families grow in freedom together as leaders model repentance, humility, and dependence on grace.
