Key Takeaways:

  • Jesus teaches that love isn’t just a feeling—it’s what we do for others.
  • Serving people with kindness is the same as serving God Himself.
  • Small acts of care reflect big faith in motion.

Hi friends! Ariel here—and today I want to share one of the most powerful stories I’ve ever read with my family. 📖🐑🐐

It’s called The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats, and we found it in Matthew 25:31–46. In this story, Jesus tells us something SUPER important:

The way we treat others shows how much we love Him. 💖

Jesus says that when He returns one day, He’ll gather everyone and separate them like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. The sheep are the people who showed love and kindness to others. The goats… not so much.

But here’s the part that made me stop and think:

Every time we help someone—give food to the hungry, welcome someone new, visit someone who’s sad or sick—we’re actually doing it for JESUS. 😲

That’s what He meant when He said,

“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these… ye have done it unto Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

(You can deepen your understanding through Focus on the Family’s article ‘Serving and Loving: Reflections on “The Least of These,”’ which explores how every act of kindness truly matters in God’s eyes.)

Whoa. That’s HUGE.

Alice, holding Mr. Fluffernutter, whispered, “So… like when we share snacks or help clean up, it’s like we’re helping Jesus?”

And Daddy nodded. “Exactly. Every small act of love matters.”

This story made me want to do more. More kindness. More listening. More caring. Because Jesus sees it all—and it makes His heart happy. (This reminds me of the Last Supper, where Jesus gave us a promise of love and hope that still encourages us to show kindness today.)

So let’s ask ourselves:

  • How can we be like the sheep in the story?
  • What can we do this week to help someone else?
  • How can we live with more love?

This isn’t just a lesson—it’s a challenge to change the world, one kind act at a time. Let’s explore what this means together and learn how to live with love in action—every single day.

TL;DR

Jesus tells a story about sheep and goats to show that love is proven through compassion. Every kind act toward someone in need is a way of loving Him directly. Real faith shines when our hands and hearts move together.

Dramatic cartoon of Jesus on a throne during judgment, surrounded by angels above and angry people below.

The Throne of Judgment 👑🐑🐐

In the story Jesus told, He says that one day He’ll come back in glory—like a king on a throne! 🌟 All the people from every country in the world will be gathered in front of Him.

And then?

He’ll separate them—just like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. (Matthew 25:32)

I asked Daddy, “Why would Jesus use sheep and goats as an example?”

Daddy said, “The sheep are the people who helped others with kindness and love. The goats are the ones who didn’t care about others and only thought about themselves.”

That made a lot of sense.

He added, “It’s not just about doing good things—it’s about doing them from the heart. The sheep didn’t help because they had to. They helped because they loved people—just like Jesus does.”

Alice imagined glowing sheep giving hugs and goats standing in the shadows looking all pouty. “So, the sheep are the helpers, and the goats kind of missed the whole point?” she asked.

“Exactly!” Yaya said. “Jesus is showing us that how we treat others is a big deal. Every kind act matters. Every time we show love—even in small ways—we’re making a difference that He sees.”

That gave me chills. 😮

It made me think about:

  • Giving my extra sandwich to someone who forgot theirs
  • Helping Alice with her shoes, even when she’s super wiggly
  • Listening when a friend is sad, even if I’m busy

All those things count.

Yaya said something beautiful:

“Even if we feel small, our love is big in God’s eyes. When we choose kindness, we’re building a world filled with joy, hope, and light.”

So let’s be like the sheep in Jesus’ story—glowing with kindness, ready to help, and filled with love. Because one act of love can light up someone’s whole world.

Fun Fact

Shepherds in Jesus’ time actually kept sheep and goats together during the day, separating them only at night. The image helped listeners instantly picture God’s care and wisdom in knowing hearts.

FAQ

Why did Jesus choose sheep and goats?

Because listeners recognized that everyday shepherding scene, the spiritual lesson landed quickly and clearly.

Joyful cartoon scene of a man lovingly embracing a sheep while elders smile and hold hearts, illustrating Christian love.

Love in Action: The Sheep’s Reward 🐑💛🌟

So get this—after Jesus separates the sheep from the goats, He turns to the sheep on His right side and says something AMAZING:

“Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34)

Wow! That’s a super big reward! But guess why they were chosen?

Jesus says it’s because they:

  • Fed the hungry 🍞
  • Gave clothes to people who needed them 👕
  • Welcomed strangers 🤗
  • Cared for the sick ❤️‍🩹
  • And visited people in prison 🚪

Those aren’t huge, flashy things—they’re just loving, kind actions. But Jesus said doing those things is like doing them for Him.

I blinked and asked, “Wait—how is giving someone food the same as helping Jesus?”

Yaya smiled and said, “Because Jesus is close to those in need. When you help someone who’s hurting or left out, you’re helping Him too.”

That blew my mind a little. 🤯

It means that every snack I share, every kind word I say, every time I help Alice clean up (even when she made the mess)—I’m doing it for Jesus.

Alice cheered, “I want to be a sheep! I’ll share all my snacks AND my glitter glue!”

Her excitement made me laugh, but also—it made me think. Being a sheep in Jesus’ story isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being kind. It’s about seeing people and choosing love, again and again.

Even a smile can shine God’s love.

Even sitting next to someone who’s lonely can be a moment of ministry.

And the coolest part?

Jesus sees it all. ✨

So let’s ask ourselves:

  • Who needs a kind word today?
  • Who can I help this week?
  • Where can I share Jesus’ love with my actions?

Every time we choose kindness, we’re building something way bigger than we can see—we’re helping grow God’s Kingdom right here on Earth.

FAQ

How can kids build compassion muscles?

Start tiny and steady—share toys, include others, write encouragement notes, pray for one classmate daily.

The Goats’ Missed Opportunity 🐐🚫💔

Now here comes the hard part.

Jesus turned to the people on His left side—the goats—and said,

“Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41)

Yikes. That sounds really serious. 😬

Jesus explained that these people didn’t help when others were in need. They didn’t give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, or visit people who were sick or lonely.

I turned to Daddy and asked, “Why didn’t they help?”

Daddy said, “The goats either didn’t notice people who needed help, or they chose not to do anything. Jesus is showing us that ignoring others is a missed chance to love Him.”

That made me think really hard. 💭

Alice hugged Mr. Fluffernutter tight and said softly, “I never want to miss my chance to help.”

And I felt the same way.

This part of the parable reminded me that kindness is a choice—and we have lots of chances every day to make that choice. Whether it’s holding a door open, sharing your snack, or just asking someone, “Are you okay?”—those moments matter.

Jesus isn’t looking for perfect people—He’s looking for people with hearts full of love.

Sometimes we don’t realize how powerful small things are. But even one kind word can change someone’s day… and maybe even their whole week!

Kindness is like tossing a pebble into a pond—it makes ripples. 🌊 Your kindness can ripple out to others… and then they show kindness too.

So here’s what I learned:

  • Don’t wait to do something kind
  • Look around—someone might need your help
  • Don’t let fear or laziness stop you from showing love

We don’t want to miss out on the chance to shine for Jesus—like the goats did. Instead, let’s look for ways to be kind, every single day. That’s how we live the kind of love Jesus taught us. 💖

Fun Fact

Early Christians gained a reputation for practical mercy—caring for the poor and sick, rescuing vulnerable children, welcoming strangers.

FAQ

Do good works earn salvation?

No. Grace saves through faith; good works reveal living faith (Ephesians 2:8–10).

Living with Compassion and Purpose 💛🌎

Jesus finished His story with something really important. He said:

“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” (Matthew 25:46)

That’s a BIG reminder of how much our choices matter!

Yaya said something that stuck with me. She told us, “Jesus wants us to live with compassion—to love others like He loves us, and to serve with joy.”

That made me think… what does that look like for someone like me?

I realized that we don’t have to do HUGE things to show love. Even small acts of kindness are powerful. 🌟

Like:

  • Giving your extra cookie to a friend who forgot their lunch
  • Saying something kind when someone feels left out
  • Helping clean up without being asked
  • Sending a card or drawing to someone who’s sick

Every single one of those things matters to Jesus.

Alice said, “It’s like when we help people, we’re planting love seeds that grow into kindness trees!” 🌱🌳

And she’s right! Every time we choose love, we help build a world that feels warmer, kinder, and more like what Jesus dreamed of for us.

Even when things are hard—even when we’re tired or frustrated—choosing to help someone can change their day (and maybe even change you too!).

So let’s remember:

  • We were made to love.
  • We were made to care.
  • And when we do, we’re living just like Jesus.

We may not be perfect, but when we serve with joy, when we look for ways to be kind, and when we treat others with compassion—we’re walking the path that leads to life eternal. 🌟

Let’s keep our eyes open for someone we can love today. Because when we live with purpose and love like Jesus, we’re part of something truly amazing.

Fun Fact

Ancient hospitality often meant survival for travelers. Jesus links hospitality with heavenly reward because mercy protects life.

FAQ

What counts as serving Jesus?

Any act of love done in His name for people He loves—neighbors, family, classmates, strangers.

Serving Others with Joy 🎁😊💖

One of the biggest lessons from Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats is this:

Every person matters to God—and He wants us to help and love them!

That means YOU have the power to make a real difference every day. Here’s how:

👀 Look for Needs Around You

Compassion starts with noticing.

Pay attention to people around you—like a friend who looks sad at school, a neighbor who needs help with groceries, or a new kid who doesn’t know where to sit at lunch.

You can:

  • Offer a smile 😄
  • Say something kind 💬
  • Help carry someone’s bag 🛍️
  • Invite someone to play 🎮

Alice says, “Even tiny helpers make a BIG difference!”

When you look for chances to help, your heart starts seeing the world more like Jesus does—and that changes everything.

💞 Serve with Love

Helping isn’t just about doing good things—it’s about doing them with love.

You don’t need to wait for a huge service project to start helping! You can:

  • Make a card for someone who’s sick 🖍️
  • Pick up trash in your neighborhood 🌎
  • Help your family clean without being asked 🧹
  • Share your snack with someone who forgot theirs 🍎

When you help with joy, it shows others that God’s love is real. And it feels really good inside too—like your heart is smiling!

🙏 Pray for Compassion

Sometimes we forget to notice people who need help. That’s okay—we can ask Jesus to help us see better.

You can pray like this:

“Dear Jesus, help me see people the way You do. Fill my heart with Your love, and give me courage to help when I see someone in need.”

Prayer makes our hearts softer—and when our hearts are soft, it’s easier to love like Jesus.

Fun Fact

Neural pathways strengthen through repetition. Consistent kindness becomes a quicker, more natural response over time.

Final Thought 🐑💗✨

Wow—what a powerful story!

The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats shows us that love isn’t just something we feel…

It’s something we DO.

Every time we help someone, smile at a friend, or show kindness—even in a tiny way—we’re putting love into action, just like Jesus did. (This idea of serving others with compassion is beautifully explained by Truett Seminary at Baylor University.)

The sheep in the story weren’t famous or fancy.

They were just people who noticed someone in need… and did something about it. That’s what made all the difference.

Cartoon-style Jesus handing out gold coins to two children with bright yellow rays symbolizing generosity and joy.

So whether we:

  • Help carry groceries
  • Sit with someone who’s alone
  • Share our toys or snacks
  • Pray for someone who’s hurting

…we are loving like Jesus.

Alice said, “It’s like our hearts become little lights, and every kind thing we do turns up the brightness!”

Exactly. 💡💖

Even small actions can grow into BIG love. Like ripples in a pond, our kindness spreads and helps others feel valued, seen, and loved.

So here’s our challenge:

Let’s be like the sheep. Let’s live with open hearts, open eyes, and ready hands. Let’s build homes, classrooms, and neighborhoods filled with compassion, care, and joy.

Because when we love others, we’re showing the world what God’s love looks like.

Grace, peace, and love in action,

Ariel 💕
