Key Takeaways:

  • Real authority belongs to Jesus; unclean spirits obey His word.
  • Real freedom means minds restored, peace renewed, purpose given.
  • Real courage grows through prayer, Scripture, and everyday kindness.

Hi friends! Ariel here! Today I want to tell you about one of the most amazing and kind of spooky stories my family and I read together in the Bible. It’s found in Matthew 8:28–34, and it shows us just how powerful Jesus really is—especially when it comes to defeating darkness and setting people free!

So here’s what happened…

Jesus and His disciples went to a place called the region of the Gadarenes, and as soon as they got off the boat—bam!—two men came out of the tombs. These guys were living in a graveyard, and they were really scary because they were filled with evil spirits. Nobody could go near them because they were so dangerous. Can you imagine how lonely and sad that must’ve been?

But guess what? Jesus wasn’t scared at all. Nope! He walked right up, and the demons inside the men started begging Him not to hurt them. They knew who He was—the Son of God—and they knew He had total power over them. That’s how strong Jesus is!

Jesus told the demons to leave the men and go into a nearby herd of pigs. Suddenly, all the pigs ran down a steep hill and into the water. Whoa! Even Alice gasped and said, “That’s like Jesus doing a superpower move!” And honestly, it kind of was. But instead of using His strength to show off, Jesus used it to rescue and heal the men who were hurting.

Now here’s the surprising part—when the people in town found out what happened, they didn’t thank Jesus. They got scared and asked Him to leave. That part really made me think. I asked Daddy, “Why would they want Jesus to leave after He just helped those men?” And Daddy said, “Sometimes, people are afraid of change—even good change.”

That really stuck with me.

This story shows us that no matter how dark or scary things might seem, Jesus is always more powerful. He wants to bring us peace and help us live in the light. And He doesn’t turn away from people who are hurting—He runs toward them with love.

So whenever you feel scared or stuck or like things are too big to handle, remember this: Jesus has power over darkness, and He’s always ready to help. (Need a simple, heartfelt prayer when you feel stuck? Check out this teaching on how to pray with confidence and purpose.)

TL;DR

Jesus meets two tormented men near the Gadarenes, commands unclean spirits to leave, and brings calm where chaos ruled. Families learn that Jesus brings freedom, courage, and compassion—still today.

The Encounter with the Possessed Men

So picture this: Jesus and His disciples arrived in a spooky place called the region of the Gadarenes. It was quiet, eerie, and filled with tombs. But what made it even scarier? Two men who lived in the tombs—and they weren’t just hiding. They were possessed by demons!

Alice held Mr. Fluffernutter close and whispered, “Why would someone live in a graveyard?” I had the same question! So I asked Daddy.

He said, “The men were so tormented by demons that they had to live far away from everyone else. They were hurting, scared, and all alone. But Jesus came to help.”

Whoa. That really hit me. These men were totally forgotten by their townspeople—but not by Jesus. He walked right up to them without fear!

Suddenly, the demons inside the men shouted,

“What do You want with us, Jesus, Son of God?” (Matthew 8:29)

I couldn’t believe it—even the demons knew who Jesus was—the Son of God—and they knew He had total power over them (see the detailed RTS study on this dramatic passage). They weren’t confused at all. They were scared, because they knew Jesus had all the power.

Alice’s eyes got big. “Even the bad guys know Jesus is in charge!” she said. I nodded. It’s true—Jesus has power over everything, even the scariest, darkest stuff we can imagine.

And guess what? Jesus didn’t yell. He didn’t fight. He just told the demons to leave—and they had to listen!

This part of the story reminded me that sometimes people around us feel alone, left out, or too hurt to ask for help—just like those two men. But Jesus never walks away. He goes straight into the hardest places to bring healing and love.

So the next time you feel stuck or scared, remember this moment. Jesus doesn’t just watch from far away—He steps in to save the day. And if He could help two men surrounded by darkness, He can definitely help you too.

Fun Fact

“Gadarenes/Gerasenes” names reflect nearby towns around the same region. Gospel writers can describe the same scene using different landmark references, similar to saying “near Fort Payne” or “in DeKalb County.”

Jesus’ Command: Power Over the Pigs! 🐖💥

Okay, this part of the story gets wild—literally! After the two men begged Jesus for help, the demons inside them freaked out. They knew Jesus was WAY more powerful than them, so they begged Him not to send them into a scary abyss. Instead, they asked if they could go into a nearby herd of pigs. And you know what Jesus said?

“Go.” That’s it. Just one word. 😲

And WHOOSH! The demons shot out of the men, zipped into the pigs, and then—get ready—the whole herd of pigs started running and ran straight into the water! Splash! Squeal! Chaos!

Alice’s mouth dropped open. “That must have been so loud and scary!” she said, clutching Mr. Fluffernutter like it was a movie scene. I asked Yaya, ‘Why would Jesus send the demons into pigs?’ (Desiring God’s thoughtful answer explains how this moment highlights Jesus’s authority over darkness and freedom for those in bondage.)

Yaya smiled and said, “Because Jesus wanted everyone to see how dangerous those evil forces really were. He wasn’t just healing the men—He was showing His power over darkness and that He came to set people free.”

I thought that was amazing. The pigs running into the sea were like a giant warning sign—like, “Look out! Evil is messy and destructive!” But Jesus? He’s calm, strong, and in control. He turned a super scary moment into a lesson about freedom and faith.

Sometimes, when God helps us, things might look confusing or even a little crazy at first. Like those pigs going wild! But behind it all is a loving Savior who’s cleaning out the bad stuff so we can be filled with peace.

This part of the story taught me that even when life feels chaotic, Jesus knows exactly what He’s doing. No problem is too big for Him, and no mess is too loud for His love.

Why did spirits ask permission?

Authority belongs to Jesus; even enemies recognize His lordship.

The Men’s Transformation 🌅💖

After the pigs splashed into the sea and the demons were gone, something amazing happened.

The two men who had been wild and scary—yelling and hurting and living in the tombs—were totally different. 😲

They sat quietly at Jesus’ feet, calm, peaceful, and smiling. The pain on their faces was gone. It was like someone had flipped on a light after being in total darkness. 🌟 Their eyes sparkled, and they just looked… free.

I looked at Daddy and asked, “Why did Jesus stay with them after He healed them?”

Daddy smiled and said, “Because Jesus doesn’t just fix problems—He loves people. He wanted them to know they mattered.”

Wow. That made my heart feel warm and full. 🥹

Jesus didn’t just heal the outside—He healed their hearts. He showed them that they weren’t forgotten or broken or too far gone. They were loved. Deeply, truly, always.

And guess what? That’s how Jesus feels about us too.

He doesn’t just swoop in to solve problems and disappear. He sticks with us, through every hard day, every tear, every prayer. He walks with us, talks to us, and reminds us we are never alone.

Alice whispered, “It’s like Jesus is the kind of friend who stays even when things get messy.”

Exactly.

These two men went from hopeless to joyful—all because Jesus met them in their darkest moment and stayed. That’s real love. And it’s the same love He gives to you and me.

When Life Feels Hard

So when life feels hard or your heart feels heavy, just remember:

  • Jesus sees you 💖
  • Jesus heals you 💫

FAQ

Why allow pigs to be involved?

Public proof showed a real transfer of power; no one doubted freedom arrived for those men.

The Townspeople’s Reaction 😨🐖👀

When the pigs ran into the sea and the two men were totally healed, you’d think the whole town would throw a party, right?

Wrong.

Instead, the townspeople came running—and when they saw what had happened, they got scared. REALLY scared. Instead of celebrating the amazing miracle, they asked Jesus to leave!

I blinked. “Wait… what?” I asked Yaya. “Why would they tell Jesus to go away after something so awesome?”

Yaya gently said, “Sometimes people are afraid of what they don’t understand. They saw the pigs were gone, but they didn’t see the freedom Jesus gave the men.”

That made me think really hard. 💭

They were so focused on what they lost (the pigs) that they couldn’t see what had just been saved (two whole lives!).

How often do we do that? Sometimes we miss the big blessings because we’re too focused on something small or something scary. Maybe it’s a change we didn’t expect. Maybe it’s something new we don’t understand yet.

Alice scrunched up her nose and said, “It’s like when you get a surprise broccoli pizza instead of pepperoni and totally miss that there’s extra cheese underneath!”

Okay… weird example. But I got what she meant. 😄

The townspeople were so shocked, they couldn’t see the miracle right in front of them. They let fear chase away their faith.

Learning from the Story

This part of the story teaches us:

  • To keep our eyes open 👀
  • To stay curious instead of jumping to conclusions ❓
  • And to always look for God’s goodness—even when things feel confusing 🌈

Sometimes God does things in ways we don’t expect. But if we open our hearts instead of slamming the door, we just might see something amazing.

Think About It

So next time things don’t go the way we thought, let’s ask:

  • “What is God doing here?”
  • “Is there something bigger happening I haven’t noticed yet?”

Let’s not miss the miracle. Let’s celebrate it.

Think About It

Communities sometimes fear change even when change brings healing. Families can choose welcome over worry and kindness over comfort.

FAQ

Why ask Jesus to leave?

Loss of pigs felt costly; fear of change felt bigger than joy over two restored lives.

Trusting Jesus’ Authority 🙏⚡💗

This story of Jesus and the two men who were set free is more than just amazing—it’s also a reminder that we can trust Jesus’ power and love in our own lives too! 🌟

So… how do we live that out every day? Let’s break it down:

🙏 Pray for Guidance

When you feel scared, confused, or unsure what to do, stop and talk to Jesus. Prayer isn’t just asking for stuff—it’s about being real with Him.

You can say:

  • “Jesus, I’m feeling nervous today. Help me be brave.”
  • “I don’t know what to do. Can You show me?”
  • “Thank You for being with me.”

Then… listen. Sometimes Jesus answers with a Bible verse. Sometimes with a calming thought. Sometimes with peace that fills your heart like a warm blanket.

Alice says prayer is like sending a letter to heaven and then waiting for a surprise reply! 📬✨🧡

💪 Remember His Power

When something feels way too big—like a hard test, a broken friendship, or a scary moment—remember this:
Jesus is stronger than anything.

You can even keep a “Jesus Showed Up!” journal to write down times He helped you. Then, when you’re feeling doubtful, go back and read about His power in your own life.

That’s called a faith boost, and it works every time!

💞 Share His Love

Want to know one of the coolest ways to show you trust Jesus?

Be kind. Be loving. Be like Him.

When you:

  • Tell a friend about Jesus
  • Help someone who’s sad
  • Say something kind when others don’t

…you’re sharing His love like a superhero spreading light. 🦸‍♀️🕯️

Even your smile can be a spark of hope for someone having a rough day!

The Big Idea

  • Talk to Jesus when you’re unsure
  • Remember He’s bigger than your fears
  • And pass on His love wherever you go!

When you trust Jesus with your whole heart, your life becomes a story of His power, love, and goodness—a story that can change the world one step at a time. 💫

Final Thought ✨🕊️

Wow—what a story! This part of the Bible shows us something super important:
Jesus has power over everything—even the scariest stuff!

When Jesus told the demons to leave the two men, they had to obey. Why?
Because His power is stronger than anything in the world. 💥

But here’s what I love most:
Jesus didn’t just show up, fix the problem, and leave.

He stayed.

He gave the men peace, love, and a brand-new start.

And that’s what He does for us, too.

Whenever you feel worried, afraid, or unsure—Jesus is right there with you. He brings calm to our chaos, like a lighthouse during a storm. 🛟🌊

Alice said, “It’s like when everything feels shaky, but you know Jesus is holding your hand the whole time.” 💗

When Life Gets Tough

So when life gets tough, remember:

  • Jesus is stronger than fear 💪
  • He never leaves your side 🕊️
  • His love sets you free 💞

We don’t have to handle hard stuff alone. We can pray, trust Him, and let His love be our anchor—keeping us steady no matter what.

Each day is a new chance to say,

“Jesus, I trust You. I know You love me. Help me share that love with others.”

Let’s go out and live with courage, peace, and joy—because Jesus is with us, and His love always wins.

Grace, peace, and freedom in His love,

Ariel 💕
