Key Takeaways:

  • God values every person; one heart matters.
  • Grace seeks, lifts, and brings friends home.
  • Families reflect Jesus by noticing who feels left out.

🐑 Hi friends! Ariel here! Today I’m really excited to share a story my family and I read in Matthew 18:10–14. It’s called The Parable of the Lost Sheep, and it’s one of the most beautiful stories Jesus ever told. 💖

This parable shows us just how deeply God loves each and every person—especially when we feel left out, lost, or like we’ve made too many mistakes. It’s not just about sheep… it’s about you and me!

Jesus describes a shepherd who has 100 sheep (can you imagine keeping up with that many?)—but when one sheep wanders off, the shepherd doesn’t just shrug and stay with the ninety-nine. Instead, he leaves them behind and goes searching for the one that’s missing.

This image really stuck with me. It made me think about times when I felt far from God, or like I didn’t belong. But this story reminds us that God never stops looking for us, no matter what. He doesn’t give up. Ever.

And do you know what else? When that one lost sheep is found, the shepherd rejoices with so much joy—like a giant celebration, just because one sheep was brought safely home. That’s how important each of us is to God. 🥰

Let’s go deeper into this story together and see how Jesus used it to teach something super special about who matters in God’s Kingdom—starting with what Jesus said about the “little ones”…

TL;DR

Jesus shows passionate love for one who wandered. Grace goes searching, carries gently, and rejoices loudly. Families can join that search with prayer, patience, and kind action.

🐑 A Shepherd’s Heart: The Story Begins

Our story starts with Jesus teaching His disciples about how much God cares for every single one of His children. He said something really important:

“Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of My Father which is in heaven.”

— Matthew 18:10

I blinked. “Wait… who are the little ones?” I asked Daddy, my head tilted like a confused lamb.

Daddy smiled and said, “Jesus is talking about anyone who might feel small or left out—kids, people who are struggling, or those who think they don’t matter. He’s reminding us that every person matters to God.”

Alice, hugging Mr. Fluffernutter extra tight, whispered, “So even someone like me? Even if I’m tiny?”

We all smiled. Yaya leaned in and said gently, “Especially someone like you, sweetheart. No one is ever too small for God to notice. He sees every single heart, and He loves each one more than we could ever imagine.”

That made me think of stars—how even the tiniest ones still sparkle in the sky. 🌟 God created us all to shine in different ways!

As we talked more, I realized something really amazing: in God’s eyes, there are no favorites. He doesn’t love the strong more than the weak, or grown-ups more than kids. He loves everyone the same. And that’s what makes His heart so big and beautiful.

Sometimes people feel forgotten—like they don’t fit in or aren’t good enough. But Jesus wanted His disciples (and us!) to remember that no one is ever too far away, too quiet, or too small to matter.

This was the perfect beginning to a story that would show just how far God will go for the one who’s lost.

Let’s keep going…

FAQ

Why does one missing sheep matter so much?

Love sees value in each person. Jesus teaches that rescuing one is worth the effort and celebration.

🐏 The Parable of the Lost Sheep

So guess what Jesus did next? He told a story—a parable—to help everyone understand just how much God cares about each of us, as clearly explained by GotQuestions.org’s overview of the Lost Sheep and Coin.

He said there was a shepherd who had 100 sheep. That’s a whole lot of fluffy feet to keep up with! But then—uh oh—one of the sheep went missing!

Now, here’s the surprise: instead of staying with the 99 sheep who were safe, the shepherd left them and went off searching high and low for the one who had wandered off.

Alice raised her hand (like we were in Bible class) and asked, “But why would the shepherd leave so many just to find one?”

Such a good question.

Daddy smiled and said, “Because that one sheep matters. The other 99 are safe, but the one that’s lost is alone, scared, and in danger. That’s the one who needs help the most.”

That really made me think. We sometimes focus on numbers, like who has the most friends or the biggest crowd—but God? God sees the one. The one who feels left out. The one who’s hurting. The one who’s wandered too far.

Then Jesus said something that made my heart do a happy dance:

“If he finds it, he rejoices more over that one sheep than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.”

— Matthew 18:13

(Rejoicing Over One: Celebrating God’s Rescue)

Can you imagine that moment? The shepherd finally spotting his lost sheep tangled in the bushes, calling its name, running toward it with happy tears in his eyes, then scooping it up in his arms. 🐑✨

That’s what God feels when we come back to Him.

This story isn’t just about sheep—it’s about you and me. Sometimes we make mistakes. Sometimes we drift away from what’s right. But God doesn’t say, “Oh well.”

He comes looking. He never stops. He celebrates when we’re found.

The shepherd in the story shows us how to love like Jesus: to care about everyone, even when they’re far away or hard to reach—a theme expertly explored in BYU Studies’ «Lost Sheep, Lost Coins, and Lost Meanings» BYU Studies Vol 60 Iss 4, which emphasizes the call to action that lies at the heart of this parable. Because every single person matters. Every journey matters.

And no one is ever too lost for God to find.

Hands-On: Find & Celebrate

  1. Hide one “sheep” (cotton-ball cutout) somewhere safe.
  2. Search kindly—no rushing, use gentle voices.
  3. Carry the sheep back on shoulders (towel sling) and cheer.
  4. Journal one sentence: “Kindness I will try this week…”

FAQ

How do families “seek” someone kindly?

Send messages that say, “You matter to us,” include friends in play, and offer help without pressure.

🎉 A Celebration of Love

The story ends with something Jesus said that gave me goosebumps:

“Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.”

— Matthew 18:14

That’s Jesus-speak for: God doesn’t want even ONE person to be lost forever. He wants everyone to be found and safe and wrapped in His love.

I looked up from my Bible and asked Yaya, “Why does God care so much about finding the lost?”

She gave me one of those soft, wise smiles and said,

“Because God’s love never gives up. It’s like the most epic search-and-rescue mission in the universe. Every time someone returns to Him, there’s a celebration—like finding a lost treasure!”

Alice’s eyes lit up. “Oooh! Like the shepherd throws a party with sheep-shaped cupcakes and dancing lambs?” 🐑🧁

We all laughed, but honestly? She’s not far off.

Yaya nodded. “That’s exactly the picture Jesus wanted us to see. When someone comes back to God, heaven rejoices. It’s not just ‘Oh cool, you’re back.’ It’s more like confetti, music, hugs, and happy tears—because every person matters that much.”

Alice hugged Mr. Fluffernutter and whispered, “God must have the biggest heart ever.”

And I think she’s right. 💖

God’s love doesn’t wait to see if we’re perfect first. It doesn’t keep score. It just welcomes us home—every time.

As we imagined the scene, we pictured the shepherd calling all his sheep together and saying, “He’s back! He’s safe!” Everyone cheering, maybe even doing a little happy sheep dance. 🕺🐏

That’s what heaven looks like when you return to God. That’s how much you’re loved.

I felt so warm inside thinking about it… and I whispered to myself,

“I want to help others find their way back to that kind of joy.”

And I really mean it.

FAQ

What if a friend doesn’t want help yet?

Respect boundaries, keep praying, keep kindness steady, and stay available.

🌟 Living the Lesson: Reflecting God’s Love

After hearing the Parable of the Lost Sheep, I started thinking… what if we could help with the search? Like, what if we were part of God’s team, helping others feel loved, noticed, and never too far gone to come back? 🕊️

Here are some awesome ways you and I can live out this story in real life:

🤗 Show Kindness

Got a classmate who sits alone at lunch? Or someone who always looks a little left out at recess?

Be brave—be kind! Kindness is like a flashlight that helps people find their way. You never know how much a smile, a “want to play?”, or even a “you can sit with me” can mean to someone who’s feeling lost.

Alice and I like to call it “sneaky kindness”—little things that make a big difference. 🕶️💛

💬 Share God’s Love

You don’t need to preach with a microphone to show God’s love. Just tell others how He’s helped you, or how much He cares about every single person.

If someone’s having a tough day, remind them:

“You’re loved. You matter. God sees you—even when it feels like no one else does.”

We even made a family kindness jar! Each time we encourage someone or say something hopeful, we add a heart sticker to the jar. Try it—it’s so fun! 💗

🎉 Celebrate the Found

When someone makes a good choice or wants to learn more about Jesus—celebrate it!

High fives, hugs, happy dances… even tiny parties! 🎈🎉

Yaya says, “Every step toward God is worth a celebration.” And now I believe it too. Let’s be people who cheer each other on—not just when things are easy, but when someone takes a step back toward love and faith.

Living out this parable isn’t just about being nice—it’s about joining God in His amazing search-and-rescue mission. You and I can be helpers who bring hope, kindness, and light to those who need it most.

So let’s go be shepherd-hearted today. 💖

💬 Final Thought from Me 💕

Wow… what an amazing story!

The Parable of the Lost Sheep reminds us just how far God will go to show His love. 🌍🐑 He’s not the kind of shepherd who forgets the one who wandered off—He leaves the ninety-nine to find the one who’s lost. And that shows us something BIG:

You are never too lost to be found.

God’s love isn’t just strong—it’s unstoppable. Even when we mess up, wander away, or feel super far from Him, He comes looking. Every time.

🕊️ Living Like We Believe It

This parable made me wonder—what if we lived like the shepherd does? What if we were always ready to reach out to someone who felt left out, or scared, or forgotten?

We can be those people who smile first. Who forgive first. Who invite others in. When we do that, we’re sharing God’s heart with the world. 💛

Even small things—like a note to a friend, a kind word, or a quick prayer—can remind someone,

“You matter. You are loved. You’re not alone.”

✨ You Are Always Welcome

Whether you feel close to God or far away, this story reminds us of something beautiful:

God always wants us back.

There’s never a point where He says, “That’s it—I’m done.” Nope! He’s always watching, always waiting, and always ready to wrap you up in His love the moment you take a step toward Him.

So let’s live with open hearts. Let’s reflect that big, beautiful shepherd love in everything we do.

And if you ever feel like the lost sheep—just know…

God is already on His way to find you.

With love, light, and sheepy hugs,
Ariel 💕
