Fractions for Kids — What You’ll Learn Here

How it works

Fractions show parts of a whole. In Builder, when the numerator is larger than the denominator (e.g., 12/8), you’ll see one full bar for the whole and a segmented bar for the remainder, plus the mixed number (like 1 1/2). The visuals help kids reason about size, equivalence, and simplification.

Jump in

  • Builder: Make any fraction; switch between Bar and Circle.
  • Compare: Type two fractions; see <, >, or = live.
  • Mixer: Add small fractions to hit a target line—like measuring in the kitchen.
  • Quiz: Fast questions on simplifying, comparing, and same-denominator add/subtract.

How It Works (In 60 Seconds)

  1. Set the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) in Builder.
  2. Watch the model update instantly and read the fraction / simplified / decimal / percent / mixed info chips.
  3. Try an improper fraction (top bigger than bottom) to see whole + remainder clearly.
  4. Use Compare to decide which fraction is larger and explain why.
  5. Use Mixer to match a target by adding smaller fractions—notice when you overshoot.
  6. Finish with the Quiz and try to beat your best streak.

Kid & Parent FAQs

Do I need an account?

No. Progress (best streak + badges) is stored on this device only.

Will this work on mobile?

Yes. Everything is mobile-friendly. If printing is blocked by pop-ups, we open the printable in the same tab—just use your back button after printing.

Why do I see only one tab or nothing at all?

That’s usually caching. Hard-refresh or add ?nocache=1 to the page URL after updating the plugin. Clear any performance/minify plugin caches too.

What grades is this for?

Great for grades 2–6 (and any learner who benefits from visual models).

What standards does this support?

Covers Common Core NF domains (2.NF–5.NF): visual models, equivalence, comparison, and same-denominator operations.

Step-by-Step: Using the App (Mini Lesson Plan)

  1. Warm-Up (5 min): In Builder, make 3/4, 1/2, and 5/4. Ask: “Which is greater? How do you know?”
  2. Guided Practice (10 min): In Mixer, set target to 3/4. Add 1/8 steps. Discuss overshooting and choosing a smaller add.
  3. Independent (5–10 min): Quiz—aim for a 5-answer streak.
  4. Exit Ticket (5 min): Use Print Practice; solve 2 items and draw a model.
