Zoo Day Budget Challenge

Join Ariel, Alice, and Mr. Fluffernutter for a hands-on budget adventure at the zoo—count coins, make change, and tally critters as you go!

By Daddy Ryan

Clinking coins jingled inside Ariel’s glittery purse, each one catching the morning light as she counted softly.
“Fifty cents… seventy-five… one dollar!” she announced, holding up a quarter like it was treasure from a sunken ship.

Alice leaned closer, eyes wide and playful. “That quarter looks like George Washington is winking at us.”

From inside Alice’s tote bag, a pair of long white bunny ears popped up.
“Confirmed,” declared Mr. Fluffernutter, his voice brimming with authority. “George approves of your financial power moves.”

Mommy Blair stepped forward with a smile, handing each girl a small cloth pouch heavy with coins.
“Today,” she said, “you’re the Zoo Budget Managers. You’ll buy our tickets, choose the snacks, and track every bit of change.”

Ariel grinned, sliding the pouch into her purse. “Challenge accepted.”

🧮 Math Moment 1

Ariel has $3.75 and Alice has $2.50. How much money do they have together?

Math Moment 1 — Combine their money

“Plenty to get us through the gates and still have snack money,” Ariel said proudly.

From behind, Ariel (taller, long dark brown hair, orange shirt, black skirt) and Alice (shorter, lighter brown hair, pink shirt with heart, purple shorts) stand at a cheerful zoo ticket booth. Mr. Fluffernutter, a solid white plush bunny, peeks from Alice’s cream tote bag. Coins are neatly placed on the wooden counter. A smiling clerk hands them two green tickets. A “Bunnies Free!” sign is visible on the booth front. Background shows a zoo map sign and lush greenery.

The Ticket Booth Test

The entrance was alive with sound and color—parrots in the aviary squawked “Hello!” like rainbow-feathered ushers.
Somewhere nearby, the buttery smell of fresh popcorn drifted on the breeze.

At the ticket booth, the clerk leaned forward with a smile.
“Children’s tickets are $2.50 each,” she said, “and bunnies get in free.”

Ariel placed two neat stacks of coins on the counter—one for herself, one for Alice. Fluffernutter, of course, stood a little taller at the mention of free entry.

🧮 Math Moment 2

Two children’s tickets at $2.50 each—what’s the total cost?

The clerk slid two green tickets under the glass and winked at the bunny. “Enjoy your visit, Mr. Fluffernutter.”

At the giraffe enclosure, Ariel (taller, long dark brown hair, orange shirt, black skirt) holds a small notebook labeled “Critter Count Log” and writes “Giraffe.” Alice (shorter, lighter brown hair, pink shirt with heart, purple shorts) points up at two giraffes nibbling from a tall feeding platform under a geometric-patterned shade sail. Mr. Fluffernutter, a solid white plush bunny, stands on a small wooden box using binoculars. Background includes lush greenery, an informational giraffe sign, and a family in the distance.

Critter Count Challenge

The zoo felt like a living postcard. In the Reptile House, snakes curled like question marks under warm lamps. Outside, monkeys swung in leafy canopies, their chatter bouncing from branch to branch.

Ariel pulled out her small spiral notebook—the official Critter Count Log.
By lunchtime, the girls had recorded:

  • 4 giraffes
  • 3 zebras
  • 6 flamingos
  • 2 lions

Alice held the notebook while Ariel tallied the numbers.

🧮 Math Moment 3

How many animals is that in all?

Math Moment 3 — Critter tally

Add giraffes (4) + zebras (3) + flamingos (6) + lions (2)

Fluffernutter scribbled something into his imaginary “Bunny Field Journal,” muttering, “Still no carrots. Highly suspicious.”

Behind the cart, a chalkboard price list shows $1.25, $1.50, and $1.00. Playful details include a cartoon peanut jar illustration and a bucket of fake bananas.

On the chalkboard menu:

  • Fruit cup — $1.25
  • Pretzel — $1.50
  • Juice box — $1.00

Ariel pointed to the pretzel. “One of those, please.”
Alice chose the fruit cup.
Fluffernutter tapped the menu with his paw. “Juice box. Hydration is key.”

🧮 Math Moment 4

Pretzel $1.50 + Fruit Cup $1.25 + Juice $1.00 — what’s the total, and how much change from $4.00?

Math Moment 4 — Snack math

Items: Pretzel $1.50 + Fruit cup $1.25 + Juice $1.00

The vendor handed Ariel a shiny quarter. “Perfect math earns perfect snacks,” he said.

The Grand Tally

By the end of the day, the Critter Count Log had grown to 28 different animals. Their snack wrappers were folded neatly in the trash, and the pouches of coins were lighter but still jingled with leftover change.

Ariel peered inside and smiled. “We stayed under budget and still have $1.50 left.”
Alice bounced on her toes. “Savings squad for the win!”
Fluffernutter lifted the pouch to his ear and gave it a shake. “Behold—the sweet sound of victory jingles.”

With happy feet and happy hearts, they waved goodbye to the zoo. The parrots, perched high on their aviary gate, squawked back: “See you later!”

With grit and grace,
